The 5 AI Skills That Will Get You Hired in Security This Year

I've reviewed about 200 security job postings in the last month, and here's the pattern: roughly half of them now mention AI in some capacity. But most candidates I interview can't get more specific than "I've used ChatGPT." That's like listing "I've used Google" as a qualification for a threat intelligence role. Technically true, functionally useless.

Hiring managers want specific, demonstrable AI skills — not buzzword familiarity. After talking to a dozen security leaders about what they actually screen for, I've narrowed it down to five skills that consistently make candidates stand out. Each one is learnable, each one is testable in an interview, and each one maps to a real gap that teams are struggling to fill.

Skill 1: Prompt Engineering for Security Operations

Yes, "prompt engineering" sounds like a made-up job title. But the ability to get consistently useful output from AI tools for security-specific tasks is a genuine, practical skill, and most people are terrible at it.

What this looks like in practice: Can you write a prompt that takes raw SIEM output and produces a structured triage assessment? Can you get an AI to generate a Sigma detection rule that actually works without three rounds of corrections? Can you construct a system prompt for an internal security chatbot that stays on topic and doesn't hallucinate procedures?

The skill gap is real. I watch analysts paste an alert into ChatGPT with the prompt "what is this?" and then complain the answer is too vague. Meanwhile, another analyst on the same team writes a detailed prompt specifying the environment, the expected output format, the tools available, and the analyst's current hypothesis — and gets genuinely useful analysis back. Same tool, wildly different results. The difference is prompt craftsmanship.

How to learn it: Start by reading Anthropic's prompt engineering guides and OpenAI's best practices documentation — both are free. Then practice systematically. Pick a common security task (alert triage, log analysis, report writing), write ten different prompts for the same task, and evaluate which produces the best output. Keep a prompt library. Iterate on the ones that work. Within a month of deliberate practice, you'll be noticeably better than most of your peers.

How it shows up in interviews: "Tell me about a time you used AI to solve a specific security problem. Walk me through the prompt you used and why you structured it that way." If you can answer this with a concrete, detailed example, you're ahead of 80% of candidates.

Skill 2: AI Model Evaluation and Selection

Your team needs to pick an AI tool for vulnerability prioritization. Five vendors are pitching. Each claims their AI is the most accurate. How do you evaluate those claims? This is the skill most security teams lack, and it leads directly to the shelfware problem — buying tools that looked impressive in demos but fail in production.

Practical model evaluation means understanding: What questions to ask vendors about their training data and methodology. How to design a proof-of-concept test using your own data. What metrics matter (precision vs. recall vs. F1 score, and which one is most important for your use case). How to spot vendor benchmarks that are misleading — testing against curated datasets that don't represent real-world conditions.

How to learn it: Take a free ML fundamentals course — not to become a data scientist, but to understand the vocabulary and concepts well enough to have informed conversations. Andrew Ng's Coursera courses are the classic recommendation for a reason. For security-specific model evaluation, read the MITRE ATLAS framework to understand how AI systems can fail or be attacked. Then volunteer to lead or participate in your next AI tool evaluation — hands-on experience is irreplaceable.

How it shows up in interviews: "How would you evaluate an AI-powered security tool before recommending it for purchase?" The strong answer includes methodology, metrics, testing with real data, and awareness of vendor benchmarking tricks.

Skill 3: AI Risk Assessment

When your company deploys an AI-powered customer service chatbot, someone needs to assess the security and privacy risks of that deployment. That someone should be on the security team. Most security teams currently treat AI deployments like any other software deployment, and they're missing AI-specific risks: data leakage through prompts, model manipulation, bias-related legal exposure, and supply chain risks in the model pipeline.

This skill is particularly valuable because it bridges security and compliance — two functions that need to collaborate on AI governance but often don't know how to talk to each other. A security professional who can produce an AI risk assessment that satisfies both the security requirements and the compliance requirements is incredibly valuable right now.

How to learn it: Read the NIST AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF). It's dense but comprehensive and gives you a vocabulary for discussing AI risk that resonates with auditors and executives. Then read the OWASP Top 10 for LLM Applications — that's the technical risk side. Combine the two, and you can produce risk assessments that cover both the business and technical dimensions. Practice by doing a risk assessment of an AI tool your organization already uses. You'll find issues nobody has thought about.

How it shows up in interviews: "What unique security risks does deploying an LLM-powered application introduce compared to traditional software?" If you can rattle off prompt injection, data leakage, training data poisoning, and model supply chain risks with specific examples, you're speaking the language hiring managers want to hear.

Skill 4: ML Pipeline Security

This one's more technical and more niche, but it's the highest-demand skill on this list relative to supply. Companies that build or fine-tune ML models need security professionals who understand the ML pipeline: data collection, preprocessing, training, validation, deployment, and monitoring. Each stage has security implications that traditional application security doesn't cover.

Training data poisoning is the classic example — if an attacker can manipulate the data a model trains on, they can influence the model's behavior in production. But there are subtler risks too: model serialization formats (pickle files, anyone?) that can contain arbitrary code, supply chain attacks through pre-trained models downloaded from public repositories, and inference-time attacks where carefully crafted inputs produce incorrect model outputs.

How to learn it: This one requires getting your hands dirty. Set up a local ML pipeline using free tools — HuggingFace for models, MLflow for pipeline management, Python for glue. Fine-tune a small model on a security-relevant task (like classifying network traffic as benign or malicious). Then try to attack your own pipeline: poison the training data, swap out the model file, craft adversarial inputs. Break it, then figure out how to defend it. That experience is gold on a resume.

How it shows up in interviews: "Walk me through the security controls you'd recommend for an ML model deployment pipeline." The strong answer covers data integrity, model signing, access controls on training infrastructure, monitoring for model drift, and input validation.

Skill 5: AI Governance and Policy

Every organization deploying AI tools needs policies: acceptable use, data classification for AI inputs, vendor evaluation criteria, incident response procedures for AI failures. Somebody has to write those policies, and it should be someone who understands both the technology and the business context. Security professionals with policy-writing skills and AI knowledge are in extremely short supply.

This skill is particularly important at the manager and senior IC level. If you're looking to move from analyst to senior analyst, or from engineer to senior engineer, the ability to write policy — not just follow it — is a differentiator. And AI policy is new enough that there's no established playbook. The people writing these policies now are defining what good looks like for their entire industry.

How to learn it: Read three things: your current organization's AI policy (if it exists — it might not), the EU AI Act's requirements for high-risk AI systems, and two or three publicly available AI governance frameworks from organizations like NIST, ISO (42001), or the Singapore PDPC. Then draft an AI acceptable use policy for your organization. Even if nobody asked you to. Even if it never gets adopted. The exercise of thinking through what should and shouldn't be allowed, and how to enforce it, builds the muscle.

How it shows up in interviews: "Our company just adopted an AI coding assistant for the development team. What policies would you recommend?" The strong answer covers data classification (what code can and can't go into the tool), acceptable use boundaries, monitoring for credential and secret leakage, vendor risk assessment, and a review cadence for updating the policy as the tool evolves.

Putting It Together

You don't need all five skills to get hired. Having two or three at a solid level puts you ahead of most candidates. The combination matters too — prompt engineering plus risk assessment is a natural pairing for a GRC-leaning role. Model evaluation plus ML pipeline security fits a security engineering path. Governance plus any of the others works for management-track positions.

The mistake to avoid is trying to learn everything at surface level. "I've read about all five of these topics" isn't a differentiator. "I've built a local ML pipeline, attacked it, and wrote the security policy for our AI tool deployment" — that's a story that gets you hired. Pick two skills, go deep, and have concrete examples ready. The security job market is competitive right now, but the intersection of security and AI skills is still wide open. If you're going to invest in learning something this year, this is where the return is highest.
